Reversible Airways Obstruction


Bronchial asthma is chronic disease characterised by increased resistance to airflow into trachea and bronchi. It is due to bronchial constriction that secretes thick viscid mucus. It produces mucosal oedema, damage to mucosal cell, damage to ciliated epithelium, shortness of breath (Dyspnea), rapid respiration, cough, chest tightness and wheezing. Duration and depth of symptoms varies from time to time. It depends upon various factors.



Classification:
A.     Bronchodilator:
a.      Sympathomimetic Drugs:
                                                              i.      Selectibe β2 Adrenergic Agonist: Metoprolol, Terbutaline, Salbutamol, Salmeterol
                                                            ii.      Non selective Adrenergic Agonists: Adrenaline, Isoprenaline
b.      Anticholinergic Drugs: Atropine, Iprtropium Bromide
c.       Methyl Xanthine: Theophyline, Aminophyline
B.      Mast Cell Stabilisers: Cromolyn Sodium, Kitotifen
C.      Anti inflammatory Agents:
a.      Syetemic: Prednisolone, Hydrocortisone
b.      Inhalation: Beclomethasone, Budesonide, Flunisolide, Fluticasone
